Approaching Cortijo la Solana along the proverbial long and winding road, passing goat farms and olive and almond groves, you may begin to wonder where you are going to end up. However you are soon rewarded with the sight of the large farmhouse sitting on the hillside below the cork oaks.

Recently renovated, the old Cortijo sits high on the mountainside in the shadow of the Sierra del Torcal - the wind-sculpted mass of limestone which forms part of the Parque Natural El Torcal.

Situated in Malaga Province, in the heart of Andalucia, Southern Spain, we are 3km from the village of Villaneuva de la Concepcion, 40 minutes' drive from Malaga airport and one hour from Granada airport. Surrounded on all sides by a landscape of hills and rocky outcrops, this is rural Spain at its best.

Interspersed amongst the hills are numerous goat tracks and the sounds of goat bells along with their herders are never far away, but despite this rural setting you are ideally situated to make day trips to the historic cities of Granada (1.5 hrs), Cordoba (2 hrs) or Seville (2 hrs). The beaches of Malaga and the coast are also only a short drive away.

The owners David and Diana Worthy, who for 30 years ran the highly successful Crich Pottery in Derbyshire, England, welcome you to their new home, Cortijo la Solana. Having spent many summers cycle-touring across the whole of Spain, Di and David would always home in on Andalucia and the harsh beauty of the mountains north of Malaga.

In this privileged environment they have created the perfect rural retreat, both for those wishing peace and tranquillity and those wanting to take part in outdoor activities such as cycling, walking, climbing, birdwatching, horseriding or simply to enjoy the wonderful flora and fauna of the surrounding area. With stunning all-round views to the Mediterranean coast and encircling sierras, giving magnificent sunsets, this is the ideal location for anyone wanting to experience real Spain.

This spectacular old farmhouse has been lovingly restored and converted into very special self catering accommodation, while remaining true to local rustic tradition with extensive use of tile, beam, and woodwork throughout, giving a truly Andaluz feel. However much of the furniture and trimmings come from much further afield, reflecting the owners' tastes in Indian and African craftsmanship, with many items collected on their extensive travels around the world.
